Bayelsa Deputy Gov Drags Assembly, Police, SSS to Court Over 'Impeachment Plot'

The Deputy Governor of Bayelsa State, Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, has taken legal action against the Bayelsa State House of Assembly, its Speaker, and several top government officials, accusing them of plotting to remove him from office.

In a suit filed before the Federal High Court in Abuja, Ewhrudjakpo alleged that members of the House were being pressured to impeach him for refusing to resign from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), unlike Governor Douye Diri, who recently quit the party.

Through his lawyer, Reuben Egwuaba, the deputy governor claimed that the plot also targets some local government chairmen, including Sagbama LGA boss, Alice Tange, who reportedly face threats of removal for declining to defect from the PDP to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

After hearing from Ewhrudjakpo’s counsel, Justice Emeka Nwite ordered all the defendants to appear before the court and show why interim reliefs sought by the plaintiff should not be granted.

Those listed as defendants include the Bayelsa State House of Assembly, its Speaker, the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), the Director-General of the Department of State Services (DSS), the Attorney-General of Bayelsa State, the Chief Judge of the state, and the Clerk of the House.

The Justice ruled that it would serve the interest of justice to give the defendants the opportunity to respond before any injunction is granted.

Among the interim reliefs Ewhrudjakpo is seeking is an order restraining the defendants from initiating or carrying out any impeachment process against him for refusing to defect from the PDP to the APC or any other political party.

He is also asking the court to bar the defendants from holding any meetings or proceedings aimed at removing him, from recognising any replacement as deputy governor, or from withdrawing his official security protection pending the hearing and determination of the motion on notice.

The case was adjourned to November 13 for hearing.
