Aganaba Says Bayelsa Could Gain More Federal Projects If Diri Joins APC

Executive Director of Social and Human Capital Development at the South-South Development Commission, Preye Aganaba, has said Bayelsa State stands to benefit from increased federal attention and projects if Governor Douye Diri defects to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Aganaba stated this during a radio programme on Rhythm 94.7 FM in Yenagoa on Monday, amid mounting speculation over Diri’s political future following his resignation from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) last week.

His comments come on the heels of recent realignments within Bayelsa’s political landscape, including the defection of Senator Benson Konbowei, who represents Bayelsa Central, from the PDP to the APC.

Konbowei’s resignation was formally acknowledged by Senate President Godswill Akpabio during last Thursday’s plenary.

Aganaba, a founding APC chieftain in the state, said the party was open to receiving Governor Diri, describing such a move as a "natural alignment" with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope agenda.

"The impactful leadership and bold reforms of President Bola Tinubu have created significant opportunities for governors to drive development in their states.

"If Governor Diri decides to join the APC, there is nothing unusual about it. It is only natural for leaders who are people-oriented to align with the president."

He believed that decisions regarding Diri’s possible entry into the APC would be handled by the party’s national leadership, while the state chapter would follow due process.

Aganaba was confidence that stronger collaboration between state and federal leaders would attract more infrastructural projects and investments to Bayelsa.

He also dismissed rumours that former President Goodluck Jonathan was considering a return to electoral politics in 2027, describing him as a revered statesman whose influence should serve as guidance for emerging leaders.
