17 ADC Lawmakers Defect to NDC in House of Reps Shake-Up

Nigeria House of Representatives members during plenary in Abuja as 17 ADC lawmakers defect to NDC

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has received a massive boost after 17 members of the House of Representatives quit the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to join its ranks during Tuesday’s plenary.

The lawmakers, drawn from constituencies in Kano, Anambra, Lagos, Edo and Rivers states, presented individual letters on the floor of the House, blaming "unresolved crises at every level" within the ADC for their departure.

Yusuf Umar Datti, who represents Kura/Madobi/Garun Mallam in Kano State, told the chamber that persistent instability in the party had hampered his ability to represent his constituents effectively.

His position was echoed by Harris Okonkwo of Idemili North/Idemili South, Anambra State, who said the move followed "extensive consultations with stakeholders and the people I represent."

The list of defectors includes Sani Adamu of Minjibir/Ungogo, Kano; Thaddeus Attah of Eti-Osa, Lagos; and Deputy Minority Whip George Ozodinobi, who represents Njikoka/Anaocha/Dunukofia in Anambra.

Others are George Olawande of Amuwo Odofin, Lagos; Murphy Osaro Omoruyi of Egor/Ikpoba-Okha, Edo; Umezuruike Manuchim of Port Harcourt I, Rivers; Emeka Idu of Onitsha North/South, Anambra; and Jesse Onuakalusi of Oshodi-Isolo, Lagos.

The defections were completed by Ifeanyi Uzokwe of Nnewi North/South/Ekwusigo, Anambra; Afam Ogene of Ogbaru, Anambra; and Kamilu Ado of Wudil/Garko, Kano.

In a separate move, Leke Abejide, who represents Yagba Federal Constituency, announced he was leaving the ADC for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

The Speaker formally acknowledged the letters and extended best wishes to the lawmakers, in keeping with House convention.
