Arsenal Edge Newcastle to Reclaim Premier League Top Spot

Arsenal moved back to the summit of the Premier League on Saturday after a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Newcastle United at the Emirates Stadium.

The win restored Arsenal’s three-point lead at the top after Manchester City had briefly gone ahead on goal difference following their midweek success at Burnley.

However, the north London side have played one game more than their closest title rivals.

The decisive moment came in the ninth minute, when Arsenal capitalised on a short-corner routine, working space at the edge of the area for a curling first-half finish that beat the Newcastle goalkeeper and settled an otherwise tense contest.

Newcastle threatened on several occasions, with early chances falling to William Osula and long-range efforts from Bruno Guimarães and Sandro Tonali, but the visitors lacked the cutting edge required to force an equaliser.

A late opening went begging as the pressure mounted in the closing stages, compounding a difficult run of form for Eddie Howe’s side.

Arsenal’s evening was not without concern as Two first-team players were forced off through injury before and shortly after the interval, causing doubts ahead of a demanding run of fixtures both domestically and in Europe.

Despite recent league setbacks that had stalled their momentum, Mikel Arteta’s team showed resilience and control to see out the match, with goalkeeper David Raya called upon to deal with a handful of nervy moments late on.

The result keeps the title race finely balanced as City retain a game in hand, but Arsenal’s ability to respond under pressure ensured they remain in pole position as the season enters its decisive phase.
