Portable Remanded in Ogun over Assault, Theft Charges

Controversial Nigerian singer Habeeb Okikiola, popularly known as Portable, has been remanded in custody after being arraigned before the Federal High Court in Ota, Ogun State, on multiple criminal charges including assault, theft and resisting arrest.

The Ogun State Police Command confirmed on Tuesday that the musician was arrested and brought before the court on Monday.

Its spokesperson, Oluseyi Babaseyi, disclosed Portable was arraigned and subsequently remanded pending further proceedings.

The arraignment followed the circulation of a viral video on Sunday showing the singer in handcuffs, shirtless and visibly distressed, seated in what appeared to be a police holding facility.

Prosecutors told the court that the case stemmed from allegations of assault made by actress and skit maker Omobolarinde Akinyanju, widely known as Ashabi Simple, who is one of Portable’s partners and the mother of two of his children.

According to the charge sheet, the alleged incident occurred at the singer’s bar in the Iyana Ilogbo area on New Year’s Day.

The prosecution further alleged that Portable attacked Ashabi alongside police officers and other individuals at the venue.

Additional victims named in the case include Ileyemi Damilola, Akinyanju Oluwabusayomi, Olowu Olumide, Demilade Ogunniyi and Ebuka Odah.

The court also heard allegations that the singer stole a Mercedes-Benz E300 valued at M12 million, reportedly belonging to Ileyemi Damilola and linked to car dealer Wally Dex Auto.

During proceedings, two siblings of Ashabi Simple testified as witnesses to the alleged assault, although Ashabi herself was not present in court.

Police, in addition, accused Portable of obstructing and assaulting a female police inspector, Ogungbe Olayemi, while she was carrying out her official duties.

It was said that the presiding judge declined to grant bail, citing the absence of the allegedly assaulted police officer.

The court ruled that the officer must appear before a decision on bail could be considered and adjourned the matter to January 19, ordering that the singer remain in custody until then.

Separately, the Ogun State Police Command said it had ordered an investigation into another viral video that allegedly shows Portable being assaulted while in detention.
