Police Halt Egungun Festival in Lagos, Arrest 12 Over ‘Incendiary’ Publications

Twelve individuals have been arrested by the Lagos State Police Command in connection with the circulation of handbills and social media messages warning residents against attending the Egungun festival scheduled for 27–28 November in Oregun.

The materials, attributed to a group identifying itself as “OJE PARAPO OF OREGUN,” were deemed by authorities to infringe on citizens’ rights to freedom of movement, expression, and dignity.

The police described the publications as “incendiary” and said they posed a threat to public order.

In response, Commissioner of Police, CP Olohundare Jimoh, ordered the immediate suspension of the festival, citing fears over public safety and the potential for unrest.

No individual or group has the authority to curtail lawful activities or take the law into their own hands. The safety and peace of Lagosians remain our utmost priority,” CP Jimoh said in a statement.

He added that the suspects are currently under investigation and are expected to face prosecution, further revealing that the police have not disclosed the specific charges but that legal proceedings are underway.

CP Jimoh also warned that any cultural or religious event likely to incite tension or disrupt public peace would not be permitted within the state.

He urged residents to go about their daily activities without fear and to report any suspicious behaviour to the police via the emergency lines provided: 08063299264, 09053872208, 07061019374, and 08065154338.

The Lagos State Police Command reiterated its commitment to safeguarding the rights and security of all residents and visitors, assuring the public of its readiness to act decisively against any threats to the state’s stability.
