Man Dies After Hair Transplant, Dental Treatment in Turkey

A 36-year-old British man has died in Istanbul after undergoing a hair transplant and dental procedure, according to local reports.

The tourist is said to have arrived in Turkey last week for a hair restoration procedure at a clinic in the city’s Fulya district, before having dental work the following day in Ayazaga.

Reports suggest he returned to his hotel in the Sisli district shortly after the treatments, where he became unwell.

Emergency services were called, and he was taken by ambulance to Seyrantepe Hamidiye Etfal Training and Research Hospital, but was pronounced dead at around 4:30 pm.

His body was later transferred to the Forensic Medicine Institute for an autopsy, however, the cause of death has not yet been disclosed, and an investigation has been launched by Turkish authorities.

Furthermore, the man's remains have since been collected by his family for repatriation to the UK, reports insisted.

Turkey has become a major destination for cosmetic and medical tourism, particularly for hair transplants.

The Turkish Healthcare Travel Council estimates that more than one million people visit the country annually for such procedures, a figure expected to rise to 1.1 million in 2025.

The country dominates nearly 60 per cent of the global hair transplant market, with prices starting from around £1,500, far lower than the £3,000 to £10,000 often charged in the UK.

The man's death follows a similar incident four months ago involving another British national, 38-year-old Martyn Latchman, who died after undergoing a £1,500 hair transplant at a private clinic in Istanbul’s Besiktas district.

Latchman had the procedure at CINIK Clinic, which claims to have treated more than 50,000 patients since opening nearly two decades ago and advertises a 4.8-star Google rating.

He reportedly fell ill shortly after the five-hour surgery and was taken to hospital, where he died soon after.

It is said that the Istanbul Health Directorate later questioned staff and launched an inquiry into the circumstances surrounding his death.
