Osimhen Overtakes Martins as Nigeria’s Top Champions League Scorer

Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen has set a new record as Nigeria’s all-time highest scorer in the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) Champions League after finding the net for Galatasaray against Liverpool on Tuesday night.

Osimhen converted a 16th-minute penalty to register his 10th goal in the competition, surpassing Obafemi Martins, who previously held the record with nine goals during his stints with Inter Milan and Newcastle United.

The 25-year-old began his Champions League scoring journey with French side Lille, where he struck against Chelsea on 2 October 2019. He went on to increase his tally during his spell at Napoli before reaching double digits with Galatasaray.

Osimhen’s latest feat adds to an already impressive career. He made history in the 2022/23 season as the first African to win the Serie A Golden Boot after netting 26 goals for Napoli.

In 2023, he was crowned CAF African Footballer of the Year, becoming the first Nigerian to claim the honour since Nwankwo Kanu in 1999.
